Bonner County was established on February 21, 1907. It is located in the Panhandle portion of the state. The county is surrounded by Boundary County to the North, State of Montana to the East, Kootenai County to the South and State of Washington to the West.

The county was named after Edwin L. Bonner who established a ferry on the Kootenai River in 1864 near present day Bonners Ferry, ID.

The county seat is Sandpoint.
